Wrexham launch Philadelphia-inspired away kit in homage to Rob McElhenney

Wrexham have launched a Philadelphia-inspired away kit for the upcoming 2021-22 season.

The shirt, the club say, recognises chairman and co-owner Rob McElhenney’s hometown in the US.

Wrexham’s new green strip bears strong resemblance to that of the Philadelphia Eagles, the American city’s NFL franchise.

The club had been due to debut the kit in a pre-season tour to the US — where they were scheduled to play MLS side Philadelphia Union — but that trip was cancelled due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic.

What else does the kit feature?

Like the home kit, the away strip will be sponsored by the social media company Tik Tok.

The back of the kit also has the words “It’s Always Sunny…” stitched into it, in homage to the TV show ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’.

McElhenney co-created, co-writes and stars in the award-winning programme.

What has been said?

McElhenney said: “I’m delighted that this kit brings together two of my great loves: Wrexham AFC and Philadelphia.

“I hope we build great memories together, in this famous green.”

How are Wrexham preparing for the season?

Ahead of their campaign in the National League, the fifth-tier of English football, Wrexham appointed Phil Parkinson as manager.

Parkison has vast experience managing in the EFL and last took charge of Sunderland in League One, two divisions above Wrexham.

Wrexham also signed last season’s League Two player of the season Paul Mullin. The 26-year-old striker scored 32 goals in 46 matches as he helped Cambridge United to promotion to League One.

Mullin revealed that a call from McElhenney helped convince him of the project at Wrexham.

Wrexham are currently the bookies second favourite for the National League title and promotion to League Two behind Stockport County, per Oddschecker.

When their ownership became official in February, owners Ryan Reynolds and McElhenney said their intention was to return the club to the EFL, with Wrexham last playing in League Two in 2008.
